HSBC Staff Volunteers Engage with Students through the SERELT Programme in Badulla
The HSBC Volunteer Engagement Session under the SERELT (Skills Enhancement of Rural English Language Teachers) initiative was held on 3 November 2025 at Etampitiya National School, Badulla. The programme was organized by the Sarvodaya Institute of Higher Learning (SIHL) in collaboration with the Postgraduate Institute of English (PGIE) and supported by HSBC Sri Lanka, with approval from the Ministry of Education.
A team of 12 HSBC volunteers joined the session, which began with a welcome address by the school principal, followed by remarks from SERELT Master Trainer Mr. Rambukpotha and SIHL Consultant Mr. Jerome Cooray. Volunteers were introduced to the programme objectives, the SIHL team, and district Master Trainers before receiving a briefing on classroom activities and child safeguarding.
Volunteers participated in two classroom lessons:
- Grade 6 – “Baby Animals”
- Grade 3 – “Float and Sink”
They supported group activities, interacted with students, and helped create an engaging learning environment.
During a short reflection session, volunteers shared positive feedback, noting the students’ enthusiasm and expressing interest in future participation. An online feedback form was circulated for further insights.
The engagement successfully strengthened collaboration between HSBC, SIHL, and local schools, while highlighting the positive impact of SERELT in enhancing English learning opportunities for rural children.
