A group of ten undergraduate medical students from Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) recently participated in an immersive field practicum designed to introduce them to community-centered development and public health practice on 9^th April. The session offered a unique opportunity to bridge academic learning with real-world community engagement.

The program began with an interactive session on public health in Sri Lanka, led by Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, Honorary President of the Sarvodaya Movement. His presentation highlighted key public health challenges and the role of community-driven interventions in addressing them. This was followed by an introduction to Sarvodaya’s Community Development Model by Mr. Damith Kulanayake, Executive Director, who emphasized holistic and participatory approaches to sustainable development.

The second half of the program provided students with hands-on exposure through selected unit visits. Participants explored the Field Operations Division, gaining insights into grassroots implementation. At the Suwasetha Nutrition Centre, community-based nutrition initiatives aimed at improving well-being. The visit concluded with a tour of Vishva Niketan, guided by Dr. Charika Marasinghe, offering a broader perspective on Sarvodaya’s integrated development environment and mindfulness/meditation activities.

This field-based learning experience enabled students to better understand community challenges, assess available services, and actively engage in health promotion efforts. It reinforced the importance of integrating medical education with community realities, fostering a more compassionate and socially responsive approach to healthcare.
